Response to all those under the fees question (3 below this) [sorry this is a long one!] In response to the initial question: “How much are the fees for the academic year 2009/2010? Is it still £1775 or £1820?” please go to the website as previously mentioned www.hw.ac.uk/registry/TuitionFees2009-10.php as this will give you all the information you need on all courses for any year and whether you are a home student, international student, etc. There are also additional web pages and an email address. If you need any further assistance and you will also find the address at the bottom of the page which will tell you which building you need to go to if you’d rather visit in person. Some of you had comments that the University website is difficult to find information on. They are currently doing a review of their website – I don’t know when the new updated version will be ready but hopefully this will make it easier for people to search and find the information they were actually looking for. In response to the comment: “if the union spend their time complaining about issues they loose site of the bigger picture”: The students’ association consists of all students studying at HWU and we have a wide range of elected officers to ensure that we offer the best representation we can (these are equal opps, charities, societies, mature and postgraduate, black students’, environment and ethics, international, LGBT, disabled students’, women’s, among others). It is these officers combined that help us decide where the problems lie and whether something is an issue that the students’ association should be taking on, or one that can be sorted out by students themselves. The office bearers should be talking to other students, finding out if there are any problems arising within their remit that could be part of a wider issue. If they feel that there is a problem that many students are facing then they may choose to run a campaign or write a letter to the appropriate person in the uni, etc with assistance from union staff and other student officers, such as president, vp education & welfare or vp sbc. In the case of class representatives, they are trained by the students’ association education and welfare manager so that they are able to deal with certain issues locally within their school. An example of why this is important is that a problem that students have in management could be completely different to that of physics. The school officers will then be communicating with the class reps and we meet with the school officers regularly so that we can find out as a group if there are any issues affecting many subjects and we can also inform them of the main learning and teaching issues they should be looking out for. From this point, we can see if there is anything we need to be arguing for or against on behalf of all, or many, students. I would encourage any student who has an issue they wish to raise, to raise it. You never know how many other students feel the same way as you but don’t want to say that there is a problem either. There are so many ways you can do this – either on this ask a question section (as many students’ association staff and officers regularly check and respond), via email to one of the student officers, in person to a friend, student officer, through the advice and support centre in the union, and so on. Many people who don’t know which route to take will get advice from other students within a few days of putting a post up here– it is a really valuable tool to many students. As was commented, if you don’t voice your concerns or problems then we don’t know that there are any. No matter how big or small, we will try to help by either taking it on ourselves or empowering and assisting you to tackle it. The students’ association structures are changing so look out for the two “Student Voice” meetings. One is for academic issues and the other is to help direct the students’ association work on other activities. These will be open to all students so come along and get your voice heard! – You need to show us what matters to you and where our energy should be placed to ensure you get the best experience possible during your time at Heriot-Watt.

How long are girls pregnant for?

Asked by: Lee Jones

Been thinking recently, which often proves a stupid thing to do as it tends to raise issues which one previously would have suppressed.. What came to mind this time was the old nugget: What is life about? So what I came here to ask is; what do YOU live for? What pulls you through dread of day-to-day life? Is it a series of short term goals (such as: sure, today and tomorrow will be crammed with work, but on Tuesday we are going bowling!) or slightly more long term (such as; Sure, the next few weeks will just be lectures, lectures and work work.. But my friend is coming up in April and I have a holiday booked for June!) or very long term (sure unis dreadful; but when I get into the line of work I am aiming for, it will be worth it)? If 1) - How satisified are you with life? Are you O.K just living for small things such as that? Do you also have longer term goals? 2) Same questions as above 3) How did you find what you want to do with life? Have you always known? How sure are you? How do you feel about the fact that, regardless of how much you like or dislike the job you will eventually get, you will have to work some 5 days a week for, gosh I don't even know, 45 weeks a year? With only limited time to spend on what actually matters: fun, friends, helping people, family, etc? Do you have anything else you live for, other than goals? Like family, friends, a burning interest? Personally, I have no idea what I want to work with. I also know that I despise how much of my time it will eventually take up. What is currently keeping me going is that my family will come over to visit soon, and I have a holiday booked this summer. If it wasn't for that, I would pretty much slip in to alcoholism and depression (I know this sounds pathetic but I really don't care, just being open here, not expecting sympathy because I quite honestly do not deserve it: My life is probably easier than most) Also, have you ever thought about not going in to the whole career scheme and just spending your time volunteering somewhere where you are needed, where you will make a difference?

Just had an idea.. Would people here be up for a bit of a competition? My thought was, I could set up a website were you pay £5 to register. As soon as we have, say, 100 members a competition will take place featuring various things that will earn you points; like, *do something silly and have some1 take a picture of you - X points *Do an online quiz - Z points *Solve a riddle - Y points *Post a video of an impressive skill - V points Or something similar, the points is that all the elements would be fair and equally easy for every1 to win/complete. After a set amount of time, whoever has the most points win. If the membership is a fiver and we get 100 people to join, that means there will be £500 to go towards prices and maintenance of the site. (I won't take any profit! I will, however, enter the competitions.. ;) ) I have done a bit of research and first price could be something like: Xbox 360/ PS3 / Ipod Touch/ Nikon D40 / Nintendo Wii With second being: Canon Ixus 80 / 500gb external hardrive / anything else for around £120 Third: ipod, mp3 speakers, load of DVD's or something like that. I would only keep enough to cover domain/server expenses etc. Who would be interested? If enough people reply I will set it up. Refunds will be given to the extent possible if we start it up but not enough people join. Suggestions/new ideas are very welcome as well! Oh and I forgot to mention: more prices will be added if there are more than 100 people, of course! Prices collected in person, in order to confirm that winner is a student. :)

Over the years I've been here I've found that Liberty's in the Union is a really nice place to study during the day. There's free WiFi, music, food & Starbucks - everything you need! But this year I am utterly appauled by the behaviour of some of the students using Liberty's. When I come into the venue now I find that most of the tables are taken up by people playing fantasy card games. The venue is not huge & most times at least half of the tables - most of which have been pulled together - are being used by these students. These people are very loud, yelling about their games & often shouting across the room to other groups. They often dump their bags around the tables, causing piles which people do trip over. They also choose to sit in the areas closest to plug points which they don't use, preventing other people from doing so (Is it not possible for these people to sit at the other end of the room??). I have also seen, a number of times, a couple leave to go to lectures but leave their stuff with their friends, thus not clearing up space for other students. I have seen a number of these people here year on year so I know some must be final year students & thus old enough to know about politeness & respecting their fellow students.... I am aware that the union building is here for all students & that everyone is welcome to use the building - but should this mean that to accomodate this group of students, those of us who want to work here should be at a disadvantage? I am in no way saying that these people should be kicked out of the building but should be more respectful of the other students using Liberty's. If they were in cafe in town I doubt they would be acting the same way. The environment is unpleasent for people using Liberty's - I have seen students (& staff who come here) look disgusted at their behaviour. I've also seen people come into the room, look round & leave - even if there are free tables (not really good for any business!) I'm aware that there are other rooms in the building avaialable for students to hire for free, which are highly adequate for these games. I believe Zeros is also free for the majority of the day. I honestly hope that those users see this posting (or are directed to it). We are all grown ups now & should be respectful of the people around us.

I'd like to complain once again about the quality of food we get at the uni. Not the canteen this time but the food in Georgies. Granted the pizza's are a big step up from last year and the staff who have moved up from last year are doing a great job but basically thats it. The quality of food has declined, as an example, last year I enjoyed the crispy potato skins, this year you might as well just give me a whole potato. Instead of being nice crispy finger food, that can be put in dip, its just a big chunk of potato that falls apart as soon as you try to put anything on it. The burgers and the chips are a lot drier and its a waste of time asking for melted cheese on something Its not just that though, the new staff that you have on are SO slow. Thats ok initially if there learning but it's week 4 now you would expect them to be able to do more than 1 order at a time and actually be ready with chips etc. (ie.stuff thats definetly going to be ordered during the busy periods) instead of cooking them after the rush comes in. In some of your staff the attitude sucks as well. They snapped at someone who ordered 20 minutes beforehand about being impatient when all he ordered was chips and cheese! There have been other instances when they have stopped taking orders totally after about 10 orders until they are ALL done. This isnt efficient. I suppose one of the main problems is the emphasis put on presentation this year. I mean granted, it looks prettier but when Im ordering pizza or a burger, its all I want. I dont need it looking pretty as I'm not in a restaurant I just want a quick tasty meal that I can have before I go to The Comedy Club etc. not something thats looking for a michelin star (extreme yes but it gets my point across). In making the presentation a lot better, the portions (an example again, the potato skins) have gotten smaller and for the raised prices this is simply unacceptable. Ok so /endrant but I know Im not the only person with a problem with this, just ask the number of people who wait around the food area for up to 30 minutes just for a burger.

Hi, I dont know if you guys will actually know the answer to this, as it is a bit of an odd question to ask here (but I have notices a few VP's and such hanging around). If not, perhaps you could point me in the right direction. Basically, I am a bit curious as to where the money I pay in rent is actually going. For example, I am paying £67.92pw or (about) £271.68pcm. That is for a room 30 minutes from town, sharing a kitchen with 4-5 other students and there is only _one_ shower to be shared between _eight_ people, we also have a bathtub but - in all honesty - who is going to use that? I have friends in Edinburgh who live in flats, some very central and some about 15 minutes by bus from p.street. On average they pay £200-215 for their rooms which are bigger and more well equipped, and they only share their bathrooms and kitchens with 2-3 other people. So, my question is, is the uni making a tidy profit on our rooms? Surely it is important for the repuration to provide good facilities for their students? All of my furniture looks to be of a cheap make from the 70s or 80s, and the only thing in our kitchen thats from this (or the last) decade is our fridge+freezer, which is actually quite nice, other than that our table n 4 stools are all old and look quite bad, and the kitchen fan is covered in grease and falling apart! So, in short, where is our rent actually going? Are there any figures that us students have access to? Sorry about the rant! I like the uni, just not the rooms! :) Thanks.
